I wake up every morning missing them. It’s hard to get up without their laughs and cries, but it’s for them. I get dressed because this is the most money I’ve made and it’s for them to eat and live. I go to work because I am their dad and I will do what I have to.
This morning is different because they are coming for a visit. They get to see the rollercoasters I’ve fixed and ride all the rides. The money I earned will be spent on games, food and toys.
Just standing here waiting for them to come around the corner. My youngests run up as soon as they see me. The oldest walks with his mom and comes in for a hug. I can’t gauge him.
I walk them down the board walk pointing at the rides and which ones I liked. The youngest wants to get started and I have one thing to take care of before I can join them.
Waving goodbye as they walk up to the rollercoaster, my oldest is the only one looking back.
This is what was playing in my mind while he told me his memory of that day. That it was the coolest memory he has. That he was proud of me and thought I was the coolest dad ever, because I fixed roller coasters. This memory didn’t remind him of only his family, me, a trip but everytime he thinks of the state, New Jersey my oldest remembers this.
This phone call, 20 years later is the most important phone call of my life. It won’t be the last. All because I did what I had to do, I am a good father.
