Application Letter Samples

Letter of Application – Definition

A letter of application, or application letter, is a personal letter that is typically used to apply for a job.

Although in a more general sense, application letters can be used when applying for virtually anything; from a club membership to an application for entry into a school.

In the more common “job application” context, these letters are sometimes referred to as “cover letters” when they are used to transmit a resume or c.v. To see a standard cover letter, click here.

Note: Application letters are almost always written from an individual to a company or organization, which means by definition they are “personal letters” and not “business letters” as is sometimes suggested.

Sample Application Letters

The following letters of application templates are real-life examples of the types of application letters typically written in personal situations.

Application Letter – application for a job.

Letter of Application – application for a medical residency.

Real-Life Application Letter Templates

The thing that makes the above two application letter examples different from what you will typically find online is that they are “real-life templates”. In other words, they are complete, fully-formatted letters, written by professionals for actual real-life personal situations.

These are NOT your typical fill-in-the-blanks templates. They are complete letters that one can quickly learn from and adapt to fit one’s own situation.

When you need to write a letter of application or application letter, it is always helpful to have some real-life samples that show you exactly how a professional writes a letter for a similar real-world situation.

Application Letter – Internship

The real-life sample below is a typical job application letter. In this case, it is an application for a temporary internship position. These types of application letters should not normally exceed one page. A brief summary of your strengths, abilities, and previous results — showing how you can benefit the target company or organization — is a good approach. Don’t simply repeat what is already in your attached resume/cv.

Dear Recruiter:

Re: Technical Director Internship

Please regard this letter as my application for the autumn 20xx Technical Director Internship position as a 3D Modeler that is currently posted on the Pixar website. Right now I am a graduate student in the Department of Digital Art at Bedford Art College and my expected graduation date is May 20xx.

Last summer I had the opportunity to intern as a 3D modeler at the Walt Disney Feature Animation Studio in Burbank. As a 3D modeling intern I was trained to create complex and organic models and to sculpt character maquettes. That program not only developed my modeling skills but it also opened my eyes to be able to see things more precisely and to develop a solid sense of three-dimensional design. That real-world experience as a 3D modeler in the production of a feature film gave me a strong passion and love for the 3D animated feature film industry.

Without a doubt, Pixar is one of the best feature animation studios in the world. I think that this autumn 20xx Internship would be a major stepping stone for me towards a career in the 3D animation industry and I am very enthusiastic about this great opportunity. I believe that my demonstrated talents and abilities in 3D animation, coupled with my experience as a 3D intern last summer, prepare me perfectly for this position.

I have enclosed my resume and a DVD for your review. I would be happy to meet you for an interview any time at your convenience. If you need to contact me I can be reached by E-mail at xxxxxxxxxxx or by phone at xxx-xxx-xxxx.

Thank you for you time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Candice Frome

Neumann College
Office of Admissions
One Neumann Drive
Aston, PA 19014

Dear Admissions Director:

I am very interested in pursuing a doctoral degree in physical therapy at Neumann College. I have chosen to apply to Neumann because it was highly recommended by a number of physical therapists that I consulted when searching for a quality program.

The primary reason why I want to become a physical therapist is so that I can help people with medical and physical disabilities. My interest in physical therapy was fueled over the past six years when I worked at an orphanage in Mexico where I was involved in helping therapists treat the children in that institution.

When I complete my doctoral degree in physical therapy, I plan to start my own practice. I believe that Neumann College will give me the knowledge and skills that I will need to be a successful therapist operating my own practice.

I am sure that your review of my enclosed resume will reveal to you that I am well qualified to be a participant in the Neumann College Physical Therapy Program.

I thank you for your consideration of my application. If you have further questions or need to confirm any information, please feel free to contact me at (xxx) xxx-xxxx.

Sincerely,

Bradley Jessop
