Reference Letter

General reference letters are often used to confirm that an individual was employed in a specific position during a particular period of time. Unlike recommendation letters, reference letters are usually written as a simple statement of fact without any assessment of the individual’s performance or personal characteristics. Because they are “To Whom It May Concern” general reference letters, they should not go into detailed assessments of the person, although general statements can sometimes be made, depending on the purpose of the letter; as per the sample below.

To Whom It May Concern:

Teaching Reference – Mario Suarez
Mario Suarez taught mathematics at Mountain Ridge High School during the second semester of the 20xx-xx school year. He took over from another teacher and on very short notice did a credible job of teaching classes in Calculus, Computer Math, Trigonometry, and Algebra. In total, he taught these subjects to six different classes. He showed a good grasp of the material and was able to develop excellent rapport with his students. He was one of the most popular teachers.

Unfortunately, due to declining enrollment there is a surplus of tenured teachers at our school for the coming school year and we will not be able to rehire Mario. We will truly miss him.

Mario is a high energy self-starter who quickly assumes responsibility and is not afraid to face new challenges and situations. He is also very personable. Not only did he get along well with his students but also with the faculty. He was quick to fit in with an “older” staff and was readily accepted by them.

As Vice-Principal, I would very definitely rehire Mario Suarez, given the opportunity. I therefore can recommend that he should be seriously considered for any similar teaching position.

Sincerely,

Joan Clark
Vice-Principal
